A member has alerted us to suspected fraudulent activity involving altered retailer quotes and payment records.

The member reports that an individual has been obtaining quotes from music retailers and subsequently presenting altered versions of those quotes to other businesses, apparently in an effort to obtain lower prices through price-matching.

In a more recent incident, the individual allegedly provided an altered direct-deposit receipt indicating that an order had been paid in full. The member subsequently established that only a small partial payment had been received.

Members are encouraged to exercise caution when relying on quotes purportedly issued by other retailers or on customer-supplied evidence of electronic payment. Where there is any doubt, retailers should independently verify quotes with the issuing business and confirm that funds have cleared into their own account before releasing goods.

The AMA has the name, or perhaps a pseudonym, of an individual that a member has reported to be involved in this conduct. We are not publishing the name because this is an allegation that has come to us, if you have encountered this conduct we could privately put you in contact with the member that raised it or confirm/deny it being the same person involved.
