Member Update: Skills Priority List

6th January 2023

The National Skills Commission is consulting on the Skills Priority List. There is one specific occupation code for our industry, ‘Musical Instrument Making & Repair’, which has both skill shortages and an ageing workforce.

2016 Census Data clearly demonstrates the higher proportion of older workers compared to ‘all jobs’:

The AMA has supported initiatives to increase training for Australian workers in professions such as Instrument Making and Piano Tuning. An announcement was made recently about a qualification for Piano Technology, which the AMA & Australasian Piano Tuners & Technicians Association both support. We understand there is a skills shortage and there are limited training opportunities, however the Skills Priority List does not reflect this situation. The AMA response to this consultation indicated that there is a shortage.
