Reactivating Theft Alerts

In light of a number of recent break-ins in Melbourne (we have heard of at least half a dozen in 2024), the AMA is offering to publish theft alerts for members.

There are two kinds of information you may want to share, and we have a range of discreet or public options.

Information:

  • Gear that was stolen – for the public and/or for other retailers to look out for ‘2nd hand’ gear on the market. We have received information from the public (someone saw gear for sale second hand, matching the information about what was stolen) that has been passed on.
  • Information about the theft – to assist other businesses that might be dealing with similar things, or want to be prepared. We have had members ‘join the dots’ where two break-ins look like they may be related (same perpetrator/s), even when the police have different officers on the separate cases and those connections may not be made otherwise.

Options

The best option will be based on a combination of what the member prefers (do they want the information circulated or publicly available, or not) and the AMA’s assessment of how to use the information.

  1. Public post, widely shared. We publish the information on the AMA website, and share it publicly (through social media). This would also include On The Wire (monthly industry e-news).
  2. Public post, industry only. We publish the information on the AMA website, but only share it through On The Wire. If you are not on that email list, you would not necessarily hear about it.
  3. Member-only post, industry only. For information you want to share with members but not publicly available. We publish a post that members can see when they are logged in, and include it in On The Wire.
  4. Member-only / targeted email. In some cases we can email members without posting on the website at all, or contact members in particular area (eg. a city/state).

Fraud, break in and scam alerts can also be shared here.
