Observations
- There was a substantial drop in units from Indonesia, and the average unit value of Indonesian imports is more than double what it was in 2021, 2022 and 2023. This could indicate errors (miscoded recorders) in those years, and less of a change in units that it appears here.
- Given the challenge in clarifying units for this category, total value is more useful as a comparative measure. On that measure, the 2024 result is similar in unadjusted terms compared to the previous year and the 5 and 10 year average.
Outliers & Data Issues
- This category does have very low value outliers, < $10 AUV. For the purpose of this report they are assumed to beĀ otherĀ wind instruments like flutes, ie. recorders or tin whistles, and are re-coded as 'Other Wind' instruments.
- Given that this category is prone to mis-coded recorders etc, we attempt to remove them. There is a 'correction' in the 2023 data this year, where a set of imports with average value of $2 was found and moved to 'other winds'. Recent data is received with state of destination, providing greater detail and breakdown of imports which allows these 'low value' units to be seen.
- The substantial increase in average value may be due to the fact that more 'other wind' removals from the flutes category are being found. This makes the category a better reflection of actual flutes (and piccolos) but makes the 5 and 10 year comparison less reliable. Treat those comparison figures with caution.
- The spike in 2018 was adjusted, with two quarters of very low value imports from China ($10 & $8 AUV) changed to an average.
