The music sector offers a wide range of career opportunities across the full range of roles, on and off stage, but is often misunderstood. For a longtime there has been no comprehensive source of information about career and occupation options, but musiccareers.au fills that gap as the ‘go to’ starting point for information about careers in music.
The Australian Music Association (AMA), representing manufacturing, wholesale, retail and service businesses in the music products industry, has developed a resource with the support of the NAMM Foundation and will be on the ground at some of Australia’s; biggest Careers & Employment Expos this year.
Musiccareers.au is designed for secondary school students, school leavers and other young people, as well as their parents, careers advisers and other teachers that support young people.
“The AMA represents an industry, our incentives are to have talented people choosing career paths in our industry and the many related areas including music education, live performance, and to improve workforce capability with the full range of skills that are needed,” said AMA CEO Alex Masso. “We know there are shortages of particular professionals, for example some of the musical instrument technician specialisations, and there’s a gap between what the workforce needs and the information available to people considering careers in music.”
The first phase of the initiative has been launched, with two very simple components. The first is the website, musiccareers.au, which presents over 100 career and occupation options in the music sector across performance, education, retail, highly specialised professions such as music therapy, and the many supporting roles in the music industry. The online resource covers the full range of working patterns from freelancers to full time roles, and is searchable by industry section, employment type, and other variables.
The second part of the initiative is to talk directly with young people at Careers and Employment Expos around Australia. These major events attract tens of thousands of school students and school leavers considering career options. Musiccareers.au is appearing as an exhibitor alongside many other industries, recruiters and vocational and higher education institutions.
“If you’re a young person that is interested in a career path involving music, we are not trying to persuade you for or against a particular path, we are not recruiting you for a job or course, we just want to share the musiccareers.au resource to help you explore options, find things you may not have considered, and point you in the direction of training options and other industry sources of information,” said Masso. “If you’re a careers adviser or guidance counsellor, we want you to have this single piece of information for whenever someone is looking for information: musiccareers.au”
